In my last post I told the story of how I came to learn about “comps” at the Atlantic City casinos. Once I had that knowledge I used the comp cards at all the table games I sat down at and every slot machine I threw my money into. I also mentioned that the very next week the casinos were sending me offers in the mail. It took time to build those up though to the point where I could get free rooms.

To me a free room in Atlantic City beats all. I can be around people having a great time (or maybe not $$$), people losing themselves in the lights and sounds and having the casino and hotel staff wait on me. It’s my little getaway from reality! EVERYONE needs one of those from time to time. By my calculations, I need one about once a month.

Free hotel rooms at the casinos are one of the hardest comps to acquire. You have to play a lot, spend a lot of time putting money into the slots or playing the tables just to get these bonuses. So now the question is how do I build up my time to get these great free rooms? I don’t live far from Atlantic City (not good!) but sometimes I would play late into the night and driving home at that hour just was not an option. This leads me to where to stay until you can build up your comps to get the free room offers from the different casinos.

There are three main access routes to Atlantic City. You can get them all off the Garden State Parkway. The most common one is the Atlantic City Expressway (a toll road) that links Philadelphia to the Jersey shore. Running parallel to the Expressway to the north and south are the Black Horse Pike (Route 40 – south of Expressway) and the White Horse Pike (Route 30 – north of Atlantic City Expressway). These are the local roads that will bring you into AC.

Along these state highways are numerous hotels and motels to fit every budget. I have to tell you that I spent some nights in pretty ugly looking rooms that were cheap just so I could build up my comps and be one of those people staying right on the boardwalk one day. It was worth it. Today I can get a room during the week at any casino in Atlantic City. The hard things to earn are the free Friday and Saturday night rooms. You really have to be a frequent guest of the casino to reap that benefit.

This is where the argument comes in: do I remain loyal to one casino and get the most bang for my buck on the comps or do I spread the wealth around by visiting several casinos during my stay and perhaps dilute my offers?

I’ll discuss this in my next post. Please leave comments below to add anything else you think might be useful to my readers.

See you on the casino floor!
